- SynopsisDRAMA. The Law pits its wits against criminal Zigomar and appears to triumph. Rl.1 As he is being taken to the cells after being sentenced, Zigomar poisons himself in the corridor. He is carried down to the vaults and laid out on a slab. A slim black figure, its face hidden by a hood, rises from an empty coffin on the floor. It is Zigomar's companion La Rosaria. She quickly gives him an antidote to his poison. As he revives they hear the police and doctors coming. La Rosaria hides again. Paul Broquet, Chief of police, asks for a sample of skin from Zigomar's arm for the files. Left alone the doctor prepares to take the sample but is overpowered by La Rosaria and Zigomar who then escape by jumping from a window into a sheet held out by Zigomar's band. The battle of wits between Zigomar and Paul Broquet is on. Broquet is soon lured into a trap by Zigomar. The band bring him before their chief who offers Broquet £50,000 if he will leave him free to pursue his activities in peace. Broquet refuses and is placed in a wooden cage. His imprisonment is short lived, however, as his lieutenant discovers his whereabouts and sets him free(772) Rl.2. Zigomar and La Rosaria now change their field of activities to the circus, their aim being to relieve the circus manager of a sizeable sum won on a lottery. La Rosaria dressed in Oriental costume rehearses her elephant which together with a little acrobat is to be instrumental in securing the strong box in which the money is kept. The elephant, as instructed by La Rosaria, breaks down the door of the manager's caravan and drags out the box and with the aid of the acrobat it is lowered to La Rosaria and Zigomar in a sewer nearby. Unfortunately the weight of the box proves too much and the ground gives way. The box disappears and Zigomar and La Rosaria only escape with difficulty. The robbery is discovered and the manager reports it to Broquet who suspecting that Zigomar is involved disguises himself as a circus hand and joins the company. He overhears an incriminating conversation between Zigomar and La Rosaria. Meanwhile the troup assembles for the parade through the town. As they process through the streets Broquet challenges Zigomar but the latter makes his escape while the elephant holds the policeman at bay. Zigomar and La Rosaria take refuge in a gipsy caravan and disguised as gipsies go undetected past a police check point(1850). Rl.3. Broquet next discovers that Zigomar and his band have migrated to Italy where they aim to rob a rich Italiam banker. He goes to investigate and is recognised by La Rosaria in a restuarant. When Zigomar hears this he plans to blow Broquet to pieces on a mountain railway. Meanwhile, however, Broquet's assistant has discovered the plot and warns Broquet, telling him to take the other route across the lake. Thwarted in his first attempt, Zigomar decides to eliminate his rival once and for all and loads explosive bombs onto an aeroplane. In this he circles and swoops over the vulnerable little craft on the water. Bombs hit the launch, Broquet and his companion dive overboard and are picked up by a pleasure cruiser. Having barely recovered from this narrow escape, Broquet hastens to warn the banker of imminent robbery. During a ball that evening Broquet and the banker watch Zigomar assembling his band in the garden. The banker shows Broquet a device his has rigged up for keeping a watch on his safe in the cellars. Through this they watch Zigomar and his men creep in and open the safe. The banker presses a secret switch and the cellars are flooded with water. Zigomar and his men are hauled out by the police. Zigomar is sentenced to penal servitude but his enigmatic smile as he hears the sentence suggests that Broquet has not heard the last of his rival(2818). (Shotlist)
